AB The incidence of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in the prostates of HIV
positive patients was investigated. HIV positive patients were autopsied
at the NSW Institute of Forensic Medicine. Prostatic tissue samples were
studied by H&E staining and with CMV specific immunohistochemistry. Of
eighteen patients studied six had evidence of CMV adrenalitis, four had
CMV pneumonitis, one patient had CMV oesophagitis and one disseminated
CMV infection. CMV prostate infection was found in three patients, one
with no evidence of other CMV infection while one also had CMV
pneumonitis and one disseminated infection. The clinical history
suggested that prostatic CMV infection may be asymptomatic. We conclude
that CMV infection of the prostate in HIV positive subjects is an
occasional finding in patients coming to autopsy. It may be seen as an
isolated finding or in the presence of other foci of CMV infection.
